Green National Highway Corridor Project (GNHCP)

Agreement Details:

Government of India and World Bank have signed an agreement for the Green National Highway Corridor Project (GNHCP), which involves highway development in select states.

States Involved:

  • Himachal Pradesh
  • Rajasthan
  • Uttar Pradesh
  • Andhra Pradesh

Loan Assistance:

The project has been granted a loan assistance of US$500 million.

Objective:

The primary objective of GNHCP is to create safe and environmentally friendly highways, focusing on the use of green technologies and enhancing climate resilience.

Completion Date:

The project is scheduled for completion by May 2026.

Eco-friendly Initiatives:

The project emphasizes environmental sustainability by utilizing the following methods:

  • Cement treated sub-base
  • Recovered asphalt
  • Local materials such as lime, fly ash, and waste plastic
  • Bio-engineering techniques for road construction

Additional Information:

East-West Corridor:

A 3,300 km corridor passing through 7 states from Gujarat to Assam, covering major cities like Porbandar, Rajkot, Jhansi, Lucknow, and Gorakhpur.

North-South Corridor:

Connecting Srinagar in Jammu & Kashmir to Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, this corridor forms a critical link between the northern and southern parts of India. It converges at Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh.
