Introduction
The National Food Security Scheme (NFSS) was launched to provide subsidized food grains to approximately two-thirds of India's population. It was enacted under the National Food Security Act, 2013.
Objectives
- Ensure food and nutritional security for the population.
- Provide access to adequate quantities of quality food at affordable prices.
Key Features
Coverage
The scheme covers 75% of the rural population and 50% of the urban population.
Entitlements
- Each eligible person is entitled to 5 kg of food grains per month at subsidized prices:
- Rice: Rs 3/kg
- Wheat: Rs 2/kg
- Coarse Grains: Rs 1/kg
- Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) households are entitled to 35 kg per household per month.
Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS)
Food grains are distributed through a network of fair price shops (FPS).
Women Empowerment
The eldest woman of the household (18 years or above) is considered the head of the household for issuing ration cards.
Nutritional Support
Special provisions are made for pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children, with meals provided at anganwadi centers and schools.
Implementation
- The scheme is a joint responsibility of the Central and State Governments.
- The Central Government procures and transports food grains.
- State Governments are responsible for identifying eligible households, issuing ration cards, and distributing food grains.

Important Update: E-KYC Requirement
As of August 15, e-KYC will be mandatory for all beneficiaries under the National Food Security Scheme to ensure transparency and better targeting of beneficiaries.
