Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Electrical Design Technician to join our team in Champaign, IL. This position will design low voltage power distribution, fire alarm systems, and lighting for public sector facilities. Our work encompasses both architectural projects and municipal infrastructure (water & wastewater facilities). The ideal candidate will bring a solid understanding of electrical design principles, proficiency with CAD and BIM tools, and familiarity with relevant codes and standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepares detailed electrical design drawings and documentation for low voltage power distribution, fire alarm, lighting and generators in compliance with project specifications and applicable codes (e.g., NEC, NFPA, IBC).
  • Collaborates with engineers and designers to develop electrical designs from schematic through construction documents.
  • Performs calculations and layouts for branch circuits, panelboards, conduit routing, lighting layouts, and fire alarm device placement.
  • Utilizes AutoCAD, Revit, and other design software to produce accurate, coordinated, and buildable designs.
  • Assists in the preparation of one-line diagrams, riser diagrams, panel schedules, and load calculations.
  • Coordinates electrical designs with architectural, mechanical, structural, and civil disciplines to resolve potential conflicts.
  • Supports engineers in reviewing shop drawings and responding to RFIs during construction administration.
  • Conducts site visits to collect field data and verify existing conditions when required.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of industry best practices, materials, and innovations applicable to public sector facilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree or technical diploma in Electrical Design, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related field is desired.
  • 10+ years of experience in electrical design for commercial, institutional, or public sector buildings.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit (BIM) required; familiarity with lighting calculation software (e.g., AGi32) is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA 72 (fire alarm systems), and local building codes.
  • Strong understanding of electrical symbols, wiring methods, and equipment used in low voltage systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to work independently as well as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites.
