Essential Function: This position is responsible for conducting Dog Training Services which are offered at Oscar’s Pet Resort based on experience and Level. Available Saturday and Sundays.
Responsibilities / Required Skills
· Demonstrate professional & effective group class management. Minimizing as much stress as possible to run a conducive class.
· Effectively teach w/ a variety of instruction strategies (i.e. verbal, written, demonstration, hands on, etc.).
· Conduct assigned group training classes based on Company provided curriculum or GM approved curriculum.
· Have sound knowledge of various dog training techniques that fall in line with the Company’s philosophy/mission by use of ethical, positive reward-based techniques and observant of the LIMA (Least Intrusive Minimally Aversive) Policy. (Force, fear, stress inducing training techniques & equipment are NOT permitted).
· Able to answer parents' questions regarding training & behavioral issues.
· Able to demonstrate excellent dog handling and problem-solving skills.
· Knowledgeable of all dog breed behavior, traits, body language, grooming needs & health.
· Trainer must effectively communicate the use of space with all staff if outside of prescheduled group classes.
· Ensuring that the training areas are clean and tidy before parents arrive & after the class concludes.
· The Trainer is obligated to adhere to the class schedule(s) unless an emergency or inclement weather dictates otherwise.
· Trainer must wear Oscar’s Pet Resort attire while on premises.
· The Trainer must contact Management & parents immediately with any schedule changes.
· Ability to work as a team with fellow employees in the work environment.
· Computer literate. Knowledge of e-mail, text & phone etiquette and proper grammar.
· Demonstrate good interpersonal skills & professional communication skills with co-workers and parents.
· The Trainer must show good time management skills and sessions start/end timely.
· In a professional manner effectively address clients who have a dog who is not doing well in class environment.
· Keep effective notes on the roster for future use of a sub-trainer.
· Follows direction of DTPM Dog Training Program Manager for class schedules & private consultations and training.
· Works with DTPM Dog Training Program Manager, demonstrating good organization and use of time & space.
· Follow up with parents who have missed classes to provide them with the service they paid for.
· Encourages parents to continue taking more classes.
Requirements:
· High school diploma or GED.
· Certification through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT) OR Proof of Dog Training Education from accredited school.
· Sound knowledge of dog training techniques as well as animal behavior and body language.
· Competent dog handling skills.
· At least one year of dog training or pet handling experience.
· Maintain knowledge on dog behaviors and industry trends. Continued Education Courses. Min 1 per yr.
· Mentor/Assist in a class with current trainers during probationary period.
Physical Requirements:

· The ability to be on your feet for up to 6 hours.
· The ability to respond quickly to sounds with good reaction time and sudden/fast response.
· The ability to move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces.
· The ability to have good awareness and respond safely to dangerous situations.
· The physical ability to handle and safely manage large dog breeds up to 150#.
· Must be able to hear & see dogs and their owners.
Dog Trainer Pay & Levels:
Level 1: Trainer Apprentice:
Acts as class assistant only. This is the starting point for all trainers and serves as their initial learning period. Minimum requirement of two classes per week, assisting Level 2 – 4 Trainers in all classes (as deemed needed by Trainers for additional help in classes). This stage will last until the Dog Training Program Manager/Level 4 Trainer feels you are ready to move to Level 2. (Generally, 2 – 3 months abiding by Employment Probationary period policies).
Level 1 - Trainer Apprentice will be paid at a rate of $15 - $20 per hour.
Inclusions:
Assist with workshops.
Lead Little Dog Club play session (after successful completion of Dog Guru’s Group Play modules).
Exclusions:
Level 1 is not permitted to independently run any class or Private consultation & training.
Level 2: Trainer
Leads puppy, basics, advanced skills & dog sports classes. Dog Training Program Manager/Level 4 will assist with classes to ensure quality customer service and a thoroughly taught curriculum during probationary period. Minimum requirement of two classes per week. This stage requires the Dog Training Program Manager/Level 4 provide indirect Supervision and oversight and will last until the Dog Training Program Manager/Level 4 feels you are ready to move to Level 3. (Generally, up to one year in good standing or equivalent).
Level 2 - Trainer will be paid at a rate of $22 - 26 per hour ($12 per hour if assisting a class for a Level 3 – 4 Trainer).
Approved Private Training – $40 - $50 per hour.
Inclusions:
Level 2 may train in the Puppy Day School Program. (Offered weekdays 8am – 5pm).
Lead a workshop & Little Dog Club play session (after successful completion of Dog Guru’s Group Play modules).
Complete Treadmill Training.
May assist Level 3 & 4 with behavioral modification classes as needed.
Exclusions:
Level 2 is not permitted to complete Private consultations.
Level 3: Trainer
Able to independently lead all basic skills classes, dog sports, select behavioral modification classes & workshops. Lead approved Private consultations & training of Puppy behaviors, LLW, Impulse control, Recall and mild – moderate difficulty behavior modification while under the supervision of a Level 4.
Able to assist or lead with assistance from DTPM/Level 4 Behavior Modification for Reactive Dog Group Class
Must be comfortable working with “special needs” dogs in classes. Minimum requirement of two classes & two Private consultations and/or trainings per week. Understands the principles of behavior modification and can apply them to individual dogs. This stage will last until the Dog Training Program Manager/Level 4 feels you are ready to move to Level 4. (Generally, a minimum of one year in good standing or equivalent).
Level 3 Trainer will be paid a rate of $25 - $30 per hour ($14 per hour if assisting a class for Level 2 or 4 Trainer).
Approved Private Consultations & Training – $55 - $65 per hour.
Inclusions:
Level 3 may train in the Puppy Day School Program. (Offered weekdays 8am – 5pm).
Lead a workshop & Little Dog Club play session without assistance.
Complete Treadmill Training.
Eligible for quarterly bonuses based on client feedback/ratings.
Level 4: Senior Trainer
Must have CPDT Certification or equivalent.
Must have a minimum of 2 years in good standing with OPR.
Leads all classes, dog sports, Little Dog Club, Private consultations & training, & workshops.
Mentors Level 1 – 3 Trainers.
Eligible for quarterly bonuses based on client feedback/ratings.
Level 4 Trainer will be paid a rate of $35 - $40 per hour ($15 per hour if assisting a class or Skills checking classes of Level 1 – 3 Trainers)
Private Consultations & Training – $65 - $85 per hour.
