Recently, the countrymen remembered Sidhu Murmu and his brother Kanhu Murmu on their death anniversary.
Sidhu Murmu was a famous leader of the Santhal tribe. He led the Santhal rebellion (1855-56) along with Chand and Bairab. This rebellion is considered to be the first peasant movement of India.
Objective of the Santhal Rebellion:
- Freedom from the oppressive ‘Dikus’: The main objective of the Santhal rebellion was to free the Santhal region from the exploitation of the British, moneylenders and other outsiders. These outsiders were called ‘Dikus’.
- Protection of land rights: The Santhals had rights over their land, which was being usurped by outsiders. One of the major reasons for the rebellion was that the Santhals wanted to save their land.

Achievements:
- Hul Diwas: Hul Diwas is celebrated every year on 30 June in Jharkhand to remember the sacrifice of Sidhu-Kanhu.
- Inspiration for Santhals: Sidhu Murmu and his companions instilled a sense of courage, bravery and valour in the Santhals. They are a source of inspiration for the Santhals even today.
