One Nation, One Election:
Holding Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections together to reduce frequency and cost.
History:
- Held together in 1951-52, 1957, 1962, and 1967.
- After 1967, the schedule broke, and elections were not held together.
Recent Developments:
- PM Modi proposed the idea in 2014.
- A committee under President Ram Nath Kovind examined the issue.
Kovind Panel's Suggestions:
Phased Process:
- First Phase: Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections.
- Second Phase: Local body elections within 100 days.
- Hung Houses: Elections for the remaining term only.
Constitutional Amendments Needed:
- Amendments in Articles 83 and 172.
- Article 324A for Panchayat and Municipal elections.
- Article 325 for a uniform voter list and ID cards.
