ASG Appointments and SGI Role

ASG Appointments: Six senior advocates appointed as Additional Solicitors General (ASGs) in the Supreme Court for three years starting September 9, 2024.

Solicitor General of India (SGI):

Position: Second-highest law officer after Attorney General.

Role: Assists the Attorney General, advises the government, represents in higher courts.

Term: 3 years, extendable.

Duties:

  • Advice: Legal counsel to the government.
  • Representation: Appears in Supreme Court and High Courts.

Limitations:

  • No private practice.
  • No external appointments or advice against the government.
