India Names Underwater Structures in the Indian Ocean
Three Indian Ocean Structures Named Ashoka, Chandragupta and Kalpataru as Proposed by India
India's Achievement
India successfully named three underwater structures in the Indian Ocean: Ashoka Seamount, Chandragupta Ridge, and Kalpataru Ridge.
These structures are located in the Southwest Indian Ridge. The discovery was made by the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR).
Global Naming Process
The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) and UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) approve names for underwater features outside territorial waters. Individuals and agencies can propose names for unnamed features.
IHO Guidelines (2013)
According to IHO guidelines, underwater features must be characterized, measured, and located before naming. The Sub-Committee on Undersea Feature Names (SCUFN) reviews the proposals. National authorities follow the same process for features within their territorial waters.
